I had a similar problem with a parallel port Zip, which made W95
hang on the boot process. Iomega sent me a very new CD with software, but
it didn't work. It is not your exact case, but who knows. I attributed it
to a Prime super i/o chip. It happened with two Zips and two PC's.
Tired of trying things, I placed in CONFIG.SYS lines so as to
make it work using DOS drivers; the automatic installation also failed,
but it was easy to change. Try that: it won't harm.

  Starting point: (-1)^(-1) = -1
  Applying logarithms: (-1)*ln(-1) = ln(-1)
  Since ln(-1) <> 0, dividing: -1 = 1 (ln(-1) is complex, but exists)
