From: Dal and/or Gina Hunkins Subject: [PCBUILD] LT Winmodem error

Hello all:

I am installing a 56K LT chipset Wisecom modem for a client. I am receiving
a port already open message on check in Modem Properties through control
panel in Win95. Also, in system properties, the window hangs on attempting
to view modem resources. IRQ settings show that modem is using Com3, IRQ
11, a shared resource. Modem literature says set for COM3 IRQ5 or COM4,
IRQ3, but I cant change settings. Modem is PNP and jumperless. I've tried
to install to separate, but identical, modems. Original modem died
following what may have been an electrical surge during a thunderstorm.
Any ideas? Thanks tons.

I installed a PCI 3-Com winmodem and had the same trouble, receiving the
message that the port was already open. I removed the modem from System
properties, and rebooted. Then I had go into the bios and change the irq
setting to IRQ 3 for the PCI slot the modem was in, and make sure that Com
2 was disabled in the bios for that card. It was an Asus P2b BX motherboard
and had options to set the irq for each slot in the bios. When Windows
rebooted it assigned the modem to Com 2, IRQ 3 and it has worked perfectly
ever since.
