Your internet access question is answered at D Link support:

" Why canīt I share my internet connection to multiple computers when using
my D-Link switch or hub?

If you are connecting directly to a Cable or DSL modem, you will need a
router to share your internet connection or a computer using ICS (Internet
Connection Sharing) or Proxy. Switches and hubs do not allow you to share a
single IP address to multiple computers.
Another alternative is to contact your ISP and purchase extra IP addresses
for each additional computer".

Get a 4 port router, and all will be well. I've had good luck with Linksys.n
You may want to consider a wireless router for flexibility.
I assume this is a peer to peer network rather than a client-server.
If a computer is disconnected from the network it won't affect internet
access. The only loss would be files/programs on that computer.
You need to install your anti-spyware, firewall and AV programs on all the
computers.

Setup: Mom - desktop - Windows XP pro - Server
1 kid - laptop - Windows XP pro - client
2 kid - laptop - Windows XP home - client
3 kid - desktop - Windows Xp home - client
All computers are updated with service pack 2
           SOS 2.0 2004 addition
           Network - hard wired with a D-link DSH-5 hub
I'm not understanding how to get their computers to access the internet
through my computer. In network places, on their computers, it shows
my active conection but internet explorer can not find it to log on.
Any ideas on how to make it see the connection?
If we are all 'wired' together, is it still possible for them to remove
their computers from the network and then replug them when they get
home? Will everything still work?
Also, I run ad-aware, spybot, zone alarm, and norton on my computer,
none of this is on their computer, do I need to install these since they
access the internet through my compute
