        For what it's worth, I worked on a computer recently with the same
problem mentioned above.  It had Windows 3.1, etc.etc.etc.  The
display looked slightly goofy, also.  Turns out, the user was using
the wrong display driver.  Believe it or not, that change solved
more than just the "sound in repetitive loop" problem!
