Hi Ron,

Unfortunately what you observe is completely normal. Windows XP is a 32 bit
operating system. This means that the most it can address is 4GB (2^32).
Since the onboard peripherals and anything plugged into the expansion slots
also contain memory mapped components (like video memory), then this must be
accomodated also. This leaves no more than about 3.25GB of memory space for
your RAM. Thus the extra .75GB is unused.

About the only way to take advantage of this is to use a 64 bit OS, or
Windows server edition which enables a technique in Intel processors called
PAE (Physical Address Extension). Consumer versions of Windows (NT, XP, and
lower end Vista) have no way to access more RAM.

Subject: [PCBUILD] Strange RAM Upgrade

First off this PC is completely and entirely custom built. The Original RAM
used was DDR2 5400 1Gb (1stick). When I upgraded I bought the same kind
going from 1gb to 4gb. 4gb happens to also be the maximum my motherboard can
hold. Now when I go to control panel -> system -> It reports 3.25gb? Why? Is
there something wrong? I pulled out the original 1gb stick and checked to
see what it did and on reboot it said 3gb. Keeping in mind this is the 1gb
stick I used all along before the upgrade I put it back in and on reboot
once again it said 3.25gb!
