scanner locks up system

I am trying to install a Microtek ScanMaker V300 scanner to my Celeron 466 running Microsoft ME with 128 MB ram and 6 GB Hard drive. I have the software cd that came with it but everytime I load it onto my pc it locks up and will not reboot and if it does only in Safe mode. Then if I unhook it an uninstall everything then my pc is ok again. Can anybody help.
