I just worked on a HP Pavilion with a soket 370 Celeron 700, 64 megs of
RAM, Samsung CDR, Quantum Fireball 20 GB IDE 5400 RPM hard drive, on board
Intel video and on board Crystal Sound. Three PCI slots with one being used
for a Winmodem. No ISA or AGP slots. . Sound familiar? I found it to be a
well made computer,... for what it is

This one had a small  proprietary ATX case with a100 watt PS that did
indeed have a fan that was set up to suck air over the PS and then blow air
over the CPU .  It also had a sufficient fan and heatsink on the CPU. The
hard drive was mounted in the very front of the case, in the lower front
corner.

This is a 5400 RPM drive and I do not see heat being an issue here. The
drive didn't seem to run hot like some IDE 5400 Seagate's I have owned.

Are you positive that the PS doesn't have a fan? Could it be sucking air
over the PS and into the case like the one I worked on.

I suspect the problem is the quality of the particular installed hard
drives. Is it a Quantum Fireball? The HP warranty might be over but how
about the hard drive. Usually that is three years.
