Hello,
Is it possible to harm a hard drive by installing Windows 2000 Pro?
I am attempting an upgrade. I have a Gigabyte GA-5AA mobo, AMD K6-2/500, 128 MB memory, Seagate ST36531A (6gig) hard drive and Matrox AGP 8 mb video. This is housed in an Enlight AT case. Hard drive had Win 98 SE. I FDISK, FORMAT and installed Win 2000 Pro fron CD, converted to NTFS. All went smooth until shutdown. I do not get "It is now safe to turn off..." screen. The computer will shutdown (power down?), the monitor will "turn off", the hard drive makes a disturbing click and the HD LED will remain on. All is fine when I turn puter back on. Device manager looks fine. Updated Bios and drivers for 2000, same thing. I FDISK, FORMAT and reinstall Win 98 SE and I have same shutdown problem. Install MS shutdown update, change BIOS & Windows powewr settings, eliminate all cards but video, changed video card to PCI & disable sound files but same problem. I also tried a different power supply. Now I install another hard drve (Maxtor 9 gig) with 98SE and all is well. After installing Win 2000 on this hard drive, I have the exact same problem as described above.
I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.
Thank you.
