<<<< I have a toshiba laptop that just stopped working all of a sudden with
this error message "INVALID DISK & CHECK SUM (cmos)".>>>>

 Hi,

(1)invalid disk:-- are you sure you have not left behind a floppy or cd in the respetive drives before you shut down the system? if you have remove it immediately on powering up.

enter your bios (i assume you know how..otherwise post back to list) and see what the boot order is. change it to "boot from disk as the first option" and see if it boots.

(2) CHECKSUM:- this indicates that the battery holding the cmos info is dead. such laptop batteries are called RTC battery and one normally gets a msg. something to the effect " RTC battery bad..."

the problem here is these batteries are specific to the model/manufacturer of the laptop unlike desktops where they are sort of generic.

so your solution would be to get on to the website of toshiba/input the model/serial no. of your laptop and see where you can get a replacement. you can also contact their support people and put forth your problem.

if you post back the model/serial no. of your laptop then list members may be able to help further.

good luck---Venkat
