Today seems an appropriate day for me to announce that there is life after
death! At least there was for my DVDRW drive. After doing a bit of searching
on the Internet, I found a DOS based utility that will resurrect a drive
that failed a firmware update. It took a bit of doing to get a DOS machine
running again (it gets harder every day), but once that was set up, the
"repair" went smoothly and I now have a working DVDRW drive once again. The
repair utility to use depends on the brand of drive you have. Or, more
specifically, the chipset your drive is based on. Search for keywords
"failed firmware update" for the brand of drive.

Hope this may help someone else one of these times.

Christ is risen,

Peter
