Cal, I work on laptops that are being donated to schools and frequently
encounter password problems.

So far as I know, if the administrator password is not available, the
notebook can be accessed only by using the Master password. This password
is not disclosed to the purchaser at the time of purchase and is unique for
each unit. It can be obtained from Dell Technical Support only by an owner
who can document his/her ownership to the satisfaction of Dell.

My experience is that neither the primary or administrator passwords
can be circumvented by removing the battery, changing a jumper or similar
techniques. If either password is lost, the only recourse is to contact
Dell for the Master password and be prepared to document ownership in order
to obtain it. (I have not been successful in going this route.)
