My roommate had a similar problem with a Packard Bell (166Mhz) computer.  After his factory mouse died he bought a cheap mouse and subsequently his keyboard stopped working.  After six months of fighting with Packard Bell I plugged my mouse and keyboard into the machine and all problems quit.
