I can't recall the at code to input into your modem, but your
instruction book should contain the code to silence the modem.as well
as many other codes. The noise you hear is from the modem speaker not
the computer or external speaker. As I recall atm1 is used to turn the
modem speaker on or off. Any basic program such as Hyperterminal
should allow you to input the code.

Subject: [PCBUILD] Modem board installation

: All fixed!
:
: I ended up taking more of the computer apart than I wanted. I had
: tried all the easily available slots and finally decided to try the
: two that were up under all the ribbon cables. I hated unplugging
: things for access.
:
: First try it loaded right up and set a COM3 up.
:
: Works find. I just can't shut the speaker off! Have two computers
: with internal cards and even turning the volume off under devices I
: still get the screeching modem exchanges!
:
: Thanks
