I am sending this for a friend.  I seem to remember something like this 
fairly recently, but I am in the midst of my own problems right now.  If 
anyone has any suggestions, I will forward them to my friend.

DVD Writer and CD-RW & DVD-ROM combo drive will no longer recognize 
blank CD-R/RW and DVD discs (messages say there is no blank disc in the 
drive when there is).  Web search shows many others with the same 
problem but no fixes suggeted other than what I have already tried: 
System Restore, delete and reinstall programs, remove and reinstall 
hardware have not worked.   Any suggestions ?

Samsung external (USB) super writemaster DVD-RAM SE S204

Liteon 52x CD-RW and 16x DVD-ROM

both installed with NERO s 7 essentials software and worked well for 
weeks until gradually began refusing to recognized blank media.
