Thanks Joseph, Chris and Clinton for your comments.  But as I said, I
couldn't see how it could be a ram problem -many machines routinely defrag
with far less ram than 64Mb.

I believe the problem is stemming from the 18 month-old Fujitsu drive, which
is misreporting cluster size.  Apparently, there have been a lot of troubles
with certain Fijitsu drives.

However, my distributor says he'll replace it, so the situation has been
resolved.
