I have the same problem with mutiple different machines using different OSs...

I never fixed it, but I discovered a "workaround".
I often wondered if it was some security setting I commonly set (and forgot???)

Click to the left (or above) the box you want to type into 
(or even the preceding box) and then hit TAB.
This will often let you navigate (with the TAB key) to a box that
is impossible to get to any other "normal" way.
