Herbert;
    There are a few links that helped me in understanding the Capacity
Limits on HDDs.
    IBM has a short introduction at
http://www.storage.ibm.com/hardsoft/diskdrdl/library/8.4gb.htm, but the
Maxtor Site is better, as it explains the problem in details. See it at
http://www.maxtor.com/technology/whitepaper/capbar0.html  .

    My system is unable to see HDD bigger than 8.4Gb, so when I installed my
10.2Gb HardDisk, the BIOS reported it as 8.4Gb. You can use the HDD whithout
problems at this stage (the hard disk is perfectly functional, only it's
smaller (in capacity)). In order to use all the HDD capacity, I used
EZ-Drive, a program that stay on the BOOT Sector in your disk and forces the
computer to recognize ALL the drive. Since then, I haven't problems in
Windows-Dos. If you wan to install Linux, you may have problems using
EZ-Drive, because Linux will still see your HD as 8.4.

    Last Detail: Even after installing EZ-Drive, the BIOS will still report
it as 8.4 in the setup (!)

    HTH;
        Sami Garzon :)
