I'm posting this again because I think the thread has gotten
off-track. It's not about re-lettering the drive. All was well
with the 'puter---a partitioned drive C with D and a CD-ROM as E.
This friend called and said the CD-ROM wouldn't work anymore;
nothing had been done to the computer for months. I guess I thought
in too simple of terms in that the CD-ROM was bad....it's an old
2X. Not much else to say; was just looking for confirmation that it
_indeed_ was bad. Is there any way to check? Can I answer any
questions for the list that might help confirm?

Thanks again.

...and I thought I understood CD-ROM's....

Playing with a Packard-Bell Legend 18CD with WIN95. I double-click
on My PC, then double-click on CD-ROM which is 'E' drive to
'explore'. I then get the following message:

        E:/ Not Accessible
        This Device is not Ready

So, I go to Device Manager and see under CD-ROM Controllers an
MKEPanasonic CD-ROM Drive and under CD-ROM also in Device Manager I
see a Matsushita CD-ROM-563. NO EXCLAMATION MARKS. Next step is to
turn off system and open it up. The CD-ROM is actually plugged into
the sound card; nothing is loose, etc.etc.

I went through all of this again (slowly!), thinking I over-looked
something. Didn't fix my problem. Did I indeed overlook
something???
