I'm not sure if I'm correctly understanding what the problem is, now, but if 
your son essentially reconfigured both the username and the password for 
accessing the router's configuration options and if neither of you can 
figure out exactly what the new password is, you can reset the router to 
it's original factory configuration by pressing the reset button.  This is 
described in the manual.  It is a recessed button on the back of the router 
that you'll need to push in with something like straightened paper clip. 
You'll need to hold the button in for about 10 seconds while the router is 
on.  It will then take a few moments for the router to re-set itself.  After 
this, you'll need to start from scratch with this router, as you did when 
you first set it up, as everything will be restored to the factory default 
settings.

Of course, don't do this if you think that I might be misunderstanding what 
your problem is.
