While IE8.0 is fraught with bugs and TECHrepublic just did a talk on "Don't 
install it until you absolutely have NO other choices," I might suggest 
disabling all power settings to your network cards in question as your 
possible solution.

I had a WiFi card that kept dropping out and found that disabling any and 
all power savings to that card kept me going.  BTW, IE8 will not run at all 
if you have System Mechanic 8 installed EVEN if you elect not to install 
firewall and/or virus protection.  Found out the long and hard way.  Also, I 
might go on about web browsers since they are such an integrated necessity 
with today's OS that you should find yourself a backup (Safari or Firefox) 
browser and keep the install files on a USB jump drive.  You will find 
yourself one day soon at a client's office or home not being able to connect 
to their computer mfgr's website as IE has decided not to work that day.
