Here's the dialog from an IBM Thinkpad forum on your problem:

Bought a used thinkpad laptop on ebay, and I'm getting Systemboard Errors:
Dev 001
Err 91
Fru 3610

...anyone know exactly what the problem is?
...any suggestions how to fix this?

Error 192... think I may have bought a lemon. Whatcha' think?

Error 192: Fan
DEV 001: System board.
FRU 3610: 36 = System board & 10 = Battery.

It looks like you've got a problem with either the processor fan, system board, or battery. Try removing the battery and running the system. If you still get the same error, you likely have a bad CPU fan or system board.

Before giving up on the machine, try reinitializing the BIOS, and if that doesn't work, try updating the BIOS if you can. (You won't be able to update the BIOS if the system doesn't hae a working battery, though.)

Sometimes a poorly seated component can cause similar errors, too. So if you're pretty decent with a screwdriver, feel free to dive in and reseat your components.

HERE (http://www-online.kek.jp/~yasu/thinkpad-hardware.pdf) is a copy of the hardware manual for your ThinkPad that you can refer to for deciphering error codes and assembly/disassembly instructions and diagrams.

It turned out that the CMOS battery was dead.

A bit of unrecommended soldering and electrical tape did the job, and the laptop was up and running again. Battery fix only cost $1.39.

Laptop symptom: Whenever I powered on, the clock was reset.

If you are capable of doing these repairs, and this turns out to be exactly what's wrong with your friend's laptop, it is probably worth doing. If you have to take it in to get it done it may not be.

I found that the two beeps mean either is either a video problem or a motherboard problem, error code 161 means dead CMOS battery but I don't know where is located because I don't a manual, my friend lost it, I don't what the rest of the codes mean. Please can't someone help me? Can it be fix? Is it worth fixing? or should my friend be better off purchasing a new laptop.
