I played with this computer last night, and got it to boot from the hard drive, but I think maybe the hard drive is labeled "B" because when I boot from a floppy, I can get an a prompt or b prompt, but no c prompt. (I remember the CD drive was labeled E, which caused problems in the past, but I didn't know what the hard drive was labeled.) Am I wrong about the B label? Do I need to do anything about this?

When I boot without a floppy, it tells me there is no operating system, and I can not do anything.

What shall I do next? Please give precise commands, just as I should type them in. I have windows 95 on CD.

Thanks,
Karen Smith

Yesterday's post:

The computer is not here, I can only work on it about once a week, so it will take me a while to try something, then email back. ***I'm pretty much a novice at this, so please give detailed instruction. If you explain why also, I will appreciate the learning opportunity.

Yes, I wanted it erased. It is my old computer, and even though I trust this person with it, I don't know what may happen to it later.

I repartitioned it successfully, but I think I accidentally formatted without transferring the necessary files to be able to boot from c drive.

I have windows 95 for it.

The DOS disk (version 3.21) I used to boot it is ancient- not the version on that computer. I had tried to boot from the boot disk, but it didn't work, which is why I tried the DOS disk.

I have not tried anything since I posted this problem- I'm going there today.

My goal with this is to get the CD drive running and install windows 95.

Thanks,
Karen Smith

I have a computer which will boot with a DOS disk, but not without
(probably due to a ding-dong error I comitted while looking for format
on a disk.) I had already repartitioned the HD.

Do I need to reload DOS, or what? And how do I do that, or whatever needs
to be done?

When you finish laughing at me, please send answers. I'm obviously
willing to experiment, as this is a learning experience for me.

Thanks,
Karen Smith
