Ray,

For a while I used the Lan Bridge program that came with a Linksys NIC and
had two computers connected. The only problem was that my computer had to
be on for the other computer to dial up.

When signed up for Mediaone Road Runner service which is now AT&T Broadband
I purchased a Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL Router. This has four ports and
an uplink port. I reprogrammed the MAC address of the Router so the ISP
would recognize the router and connected the computers to the Router with
CAT5 cables. The Router with rebates cost about $90.00. The 10/100 NIC's
were $25.00

I did notice some speed problems and by using some of the Internet speed
tests I determined that several of my purchased CAT5 cables were slow. I
bought CAT5e which is rated at 1000 MHz and made several short cables and
also wired the house. The LAN works fine.
