I think the best implementation would be to purchase a removable drive
kit [one base, fits into 5 1/4" bay in the case and one enclosing for
the ide 3 1/2" drive], install it and put the drive in. Now you can
insert the drive when you want to make a backup and remove it
afterwards. Beware - these cases may not allow "hot-swapping" [i.e.
you must turn off the PC to insert/remove the drive] and Win9x only
scans the drives at the startup, so even if the drive is
"hot-swappable" you'll have to reboot to access the drive.

Use any backup software, Microsoft Backup should do good enough...
came free with DOS 6.2, does with Win9x? I don't know...
