A couple potential problems.

First this drive is 12X CD-RW capable. You should be using high speed media.

Also, I have had bad luck with some brands of media (even high speed) in my
HP drive. Memorex, TDK both failed. I had the best luck with Verbatim high
speed media. It is a little hard to find, but it works great. I have also
heard that Sony is a better brand.
