There is nothing that you can do to silence a hard drive. You may be able
to mount it somehow (say, suspended by tape) so that the vibrations of the
drive are not amplified by the case.

25 years ago when I first started working for NCR, they shut the computer
system down for "system maintenance." I asked my boss if they "oiled the
disk
drives?" (I knew that they did not.) I never did find out what they did.
But, you cannot oil the hard drive. The bearings are sealed. Some drives
just make more noise than others.

It is possible that one of the fans is the culprit, not the hard drive. In
that case, maybe you could do something about it. Try starting the computer
with the power to the drive disconnected and see if it still makes the
noise.

Subject: [PCBUILD] Hard Drive is noisy

Hello everyone. Sometime ago I bought a barebone kit from Tiger Direct. I
built a nice PC for my daughter. One problem that I have with the PC is the
hard drive hums. Any suggestion of how to quiet the hard drive. Thanks!
