Winmodems don't consist of much hardware -- they use the system CPU and
code in the driver to implement most modem functions.
  A new modem would come with a new driver, but it's quite possible that re-
installing the driver for your existing modem (or perhaps a new driver
version) might correct your problem without replacing the hardware at all.
