Hi:

You really should do more than format the drive, you should delete the
partitions.

The error message means, that the command you gave it, FORMAT, can not be
found in the directory that you are in or in the path that the autoexec.bat
file has told the system to check for it. So the system comes back and says
it can not find the file.

The fact that your drive was compressed with win 95 and that you are using
the win 98 boot disk to try and find the format command is a problem. If
you really want to format the drive, just boot up in windows 95, create a
boot (system) disk, additionally copy the fdisk and the format programs to
it and then use that disk to boot with. This way it should beable to
access the compressed files that the win 98 doot disk isn't accessing.

Really though, rather than format the drive because you will only have a
Fat16 file system when you are done, you should run fdisk from the floppy
and remove the partitions. Shut the system off, then boot up with the
win98 boot disk and let it do it's thing.

The win 98 boot disk will lead you through making the partition again.
This time though it will ask if you want to enable the large disk partition
(if you hard drive is bigger thatn 540M) and you will want to say yes.
That enables the fat32 file allocation rather than the fat 16 and you will
get a more efficient drive. Then when you reboot, the setup program on the
win98 boot disk fill format the drive and go into the install of Win 98.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!
