  The serial ports use a much higher voltage than the PS/2 ports --
and are designed to cope with it and protect the inboard components
from it.

  If you boot up Win 9x without a mouse, and get prompted, you'll
notice that the screen says you can plug the mouse in now IF it is a
SERIAL mouse.  ONLY if it is a serial mouse.
