Bill,
I can't see any computer to be "dream machine" in four or five years time.
However, if you can wait a while, the following will drive you few years.

AMD K7-650
256M RAM
nVidia NV10 Video card
a big harddisk (say 13G)
DVD drive

I have used Aopen case, it's pretty good.
