I just ordered one for another model laptop, has a 3 year warranty, but not too cheap. $$69 for a 9 cell (longer run time) from battdepot.com. About 60% of the price of an oem. I have no track record with them. I bought a cheap one a few years ago for my Dell, after 2 replacements in 3 months I gave up. Only cost $30, plus another $15 for returning the dead ones after 1-2 months.
Happy for you that it's not the laptop. Same thing with my daughter's laptop, bad battery shorting out somehow.
Paul

Subject: Re: [PCBUILD] Alternating errror messages at startup-all fatal RESOLVED

OK, was that a WAG or based on experience?

Actually, it never occurred to me to remove the battery or that the computer would even run without it. But after removing every cover on the back of the computer, I figured out that the battery just slides out. And I found out that I don't have the problem with the battery out. Started the computer a half dozen times without issue. Put the battery back in and the problem returned. Took it out, and things are fine. So thanks for the suggestion!

Now, for replacement batteries. I know I am being cheap but I hate to spend a lot of money on this thing. It is pretty old, after all. An OEM runs $60+. Anybody have suggestions for where I can get a safe, reliable one that can hopefully last me a year or two?
