Thanks for the great info. I add programs to backup the reg files once a
week for 4 weeks on all my client puters. Have saved many a
format/load/loss data. (As a matter of fact had to go back 4 weeks on one
this past week to get it to run without the "Windows experience an error in
the reg files and must restore and reboot.)

Question??? You mention backing up the reg files before modifying...a good
habit (which I agree) and then modify...Did I miss something (which I have
been doing recently trying to catch up on my 5000/month emails) but where
did you modify the reg files. I only see modifying the scanreg.ini file? So
help. What did I miss?

    Every now and again something comes up. Like a screwed up registry. Or
you forgot to backup your registry and you made a change to your registry
and REALLY blew it. No backup, no recourse but to format. Not true! Windows
98 backs up your registry everytime you boot up your PC. And it keeps the
last 5 booted registries saved.

Anytime you make a mess of your registry and you didn't back it up, just
restart in MS-DOS or Boot to Command prompt in DOS. At the C:\>_ prompt,
type in
"Scanreg /restore" + Enter. (Space between Scanreg & /restore) Select which
of the last five registries you wish to use and restore your system. Select
R for restore and your off and running. Pretty simple. You'll even get a
seal of approval, "Good Registry" statement.

Now, for some more good news. You can tell windows how many backups to
make.
To do this you must of course make a registry change. So, backup your
existing registry to a separate file. (Good Habit to get into.)

Go to Run, and type in "regedit". Click OK. In the Registry menu, click
Export Registry File. Save to a file of your choosing.

Now to add more backups at bootup.

Go to Find, Files and Folders. Type in "Scanreg". Look for the Scanreg.ini
file. (Little Notepad with yellow gear in it.) and open it. Look for the
line:

MaxBackupCopies=5

Change the number 5 to the amount of backups you wish Windows 98 to keep
stored on your HD. (1 through 99)

After you change your amount of backups, go to File menu and click save.
Now
exit. That's it. Windows 98 will save the amount you entered.
