Thanks for the reply David. I have since installed a known-to-be-working
Linksys BEFSR41 V.2 router and altered the MTU to 1362 as suggested in the
manual (as well as other values). The two Win 98SE systems are working
nearly perfect. My daughter is now able to IM (MSN) through the router and
web access is almost always perfectly responsive.

However, my XP Home system still has intermittent problems. Using Firefox I
just went to www.cbc.ca/news and opened six new tabs using the news stories
links. The first one loaded properly. The second, fifth and sixth loaded
properly after more than a minute. The third and fourth tabs show the URL,
but have only a blank page. I clicked on reload and the pages loaded
correctly. The behaviour is similar with Internet Explorer, other than the
"Page is Currently Unavailable" error message. Oddly enough opening numerous
tabs with this site worked well enough when I had dial-up access only three
months ago. Similar problems happen on any site. Sometimes just going to a
site will still give an error and then work fine just a second later. The
Win 98SE systems will very seldom have any problem.

I'm contemplating a total clean reinstall of XP and all software (I do one
every year or so anyway) since I've not been able to find any reference to
this issue and haven't the technical expertise to dig any further. Anyone
have other suggestions before I do the big format?

Thanks.

Bill
