I'm wondering about the usb soundcard option mentioned earlier; any views on that?

Toshibas have a physical dial on the side of the laptop that you can adjust 
with your fingertip.

I'll never forget calling tech support after checking every software and 
operating system settings only to have the tech guy on the phone tell me 
about the volume control on the back right of the laptop.

Tell me if this is the case with yours.
