All the Toshiba drives that I have seen are designed for use in horizontal
or vertical arrangement. Their trays have sliding clips to hold the CD in
place while the tray goes in and out. On some DEC equipment that I worked
with, there were some expensive drives that had a center hub in the tray to
snap the CD onto - they were designed especially for vertical use, but I
don't remember the manufacturer. If you are interested, I can get that info
for you. However, the Toshiba drives should work for you, will be cheaper,
and much easier to find.

Subject: [PCBUILD] I have a question

I am building a series of servers and they require IDE cd rom
drives. These drives must be mounted in the front of the box
sideways.

The drives I intended to use will not run in this configuration,
erroring out unless I tip the case on the side. This is not
acceptable.

My question: Is anyone aware of an IDE drive that will operate
when turned on the side?
