Bill:

I am by no mean a computer literate person, but have you checked to see that
all the ports are enabled in the setup. You know when you first boot up your
computer and the message comes up to press F8, etc. for your system
configuration, look there. I had a problem with my scanner recently after
Gateway had installed a new modem and found out they had disabled my other
ports. Just an idea. After changing them to "enable", everything worked
just fine. BTW, I spent days trying to figure out why my scanner was not
working since it had been working just fine prior to my taking it to Gateway.
Like you, everything I checked Device Manage, etc. showed that there were no
conflicts, device working properly, etc.

I am building 2 PCs from bits for friends. Both are working fine with
a clean Win98. They are a Compaq Deskpro and an HP Vectra. Both
computers display almost identical 'faults' that I believe I am doing
something wrong and it's not the technology that's at fault.
I am attempting to put HSF V90 'bog standard' soft modems into them
but neither of them will detect them by PnP. Manual install refuses to
install it on the existing two ports (1 & 2) and I have tried installing
another
com port but windows is unable to open it when I shift the modem onto it..
I must be doing something wrong or missing something. Can anyone help
please? e.g. I currently have the modem on com 4 (the option given to me
during installation.) but com 4 doesn't appear when I look in Control
Panel/system/Device Manager which was the option given to me during
installation. How do I enable this port please? All drivers are loaded ok
and Diagnostics show healthy modems.
