Roger.
If you have a CD Rom. I think that may be the suspect "atapi" and "IDEPort1"
gives the hint. If it was the hard drive it would probably read "ideport0"
(Master drive). It could also be a problem with the IDE controller.
Two things I would try. First disconnect the CD ROM. See if problem goes
away. If it goes away. Install CD ROM on the second IDE controller. See if
it works now. <shrug> who knows could even be a faulty ribbon.
However, assuming it is the hard drive, you may want to go to Fujitsu's web
site. I don't use Fujitsu, so I can't be sure, but they probably have a
utility to check the hard drive - One reason I've stuck to WD:-).
Good luck
Brendon

Subject: [PCBUILD] Win2000 start up issue

Hi,

I've been using Windows 2000 Professional for about 5 months and had no
major problems till now. Windows takes a very long time to start up. It
stalls at the graphical "Starting Windows" screen when the progress bar gets
to about 50%. On further investigation in the event log there are four
identical error entries with every boot as follows...

Event Type: Error
Event Source: atapi
Event Category: None
Event ID: 9
Date: 12/03/2001
Time: 5:11:06 p.m.
User: N/A
Computer: MIKASARG
Description:
The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort1, did not respond within the timeout period.
Data:
0000: 0f 00 10 00 01 00 64 00 ......d.
0008: 00 00 00 00 09 00 04 c0 .......À
0010: 00 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........

0030: 00 00 00 00 07 00 00 00 ........

I had installed a new Fujitsu 10.2 GB hard disk drive just prior to
installing the operating system. Is this an indication that the hard disk is
failing or is it an operating system problem? Any suggestions for checking
the hard disk integrity would be much appreciated. I've a lot of work on
this machine and yes it is backed up, but I'd rather not go through the
hassle of finding the drive has failed if I can prove to the vendor that it
has some serious issues.

Many thanks in advance.
Regards Roger Griffiths
