Did you at one time use the "Internet Connection Sharing" that's built into XP?
This is important because it would conflict with anything else, the router,
that's handing out IPs.

It looks like the adapter in the 98 PC is not DHCP enabled and is not getting
DNS server settings. I saw a post that describes how to reslove this.
