Rick, what kind of Packet Writing Software do you plan on using??
I use DirectCD from Adaptec for Packet Writing, there are others but your
choices are going to be limited.

DirectCD formats the CD-RW disk and enables drive-letter-access on the CD-RW
drive, be forewarned, I and many others do not find "Packet Writing" a very
dependable method for backup.  As you mentioned in your original post,
"Other CD-RW drives may have problems recognizing it" is not only true, but
your own CD-RW drive may have problems from time-to-time reading its own
disk.

Adaptec has a UDF utility that will allow your CD-ROM to read the UDF format
created by DirectCD.
You will need to search the site and check the compatibility list to find a
CD-ROM that supports this.
Also, make sure your CD-ROM supports Audio extraction and Disk-At-Once (DAO)
to enhance your Burning abilities. :~)
In burning terms DAO stands for the aforementioned not "Data-Access-Object,"
took me a while to get this. :~)

Also, Adaptec's CD-Mastering software "EZ_CD_Creator Deluxe" is good
Mastering Software (You will find Info at the Adaptec link about it) but
check-out "Nero Burning ROM" from Ahead software:
http://www.ahead.de/Index2.htm , it makes a wider variety of Data CD's than
Creator.

At the risk of repeating myself, make sure you check the compatibility's of
both your Burner and CD-ROM drive's with the software you intend to use.

A little unsolicited Burner Advise, the bigger the buffer the better.



My setup is all SCSI, 2940UW Adaptec controller, Plextor 12/20plex CD-ROM,
Yamaha 4260ti RW drive, and Two UWAtlas II 2.1 gig's, I don't make Coasters
with this setup.
