I switched to Maxtor when there "was" a price difference, and also
when I had a couple WDs fail. They were old, (3 years and 5 years).

The prices seem to be getting closer together.
When comparing, be sure you are looking at the same "families" of
drives from the different manufacturers.
Some "family" names are Performance, Expert, Caviar, DX, etc...

I originally started using Maxtors when 3G or so came out, so
none of them are "old" yet, and I have had no failures (yet).
Back then, I did not like their WEB site too much, but it has gotten
VERY easy to find exact drive info now...

I just got a WD 100G. Check back with me in five years to see how
I made out. <VBG>...  If it fails in 6 months or less, I'll let you know.
I always try to "burn in" a drive, (at least a little) before putting it into
service.
