sound volume not working

Folks:
My little yellow speaker in the tray will not come up. Instead I get an
error message saying, "sndvol32 caused a stack fault in module
kernel32.dll at of143bff725c5
Registers:  yada dada yada etc.

Can anybody suggest the fix for this?

Also my AcerRack does the same thing. It does not come up when clicking
on the ikon and produces the same error message.
The speakers and sound DO WORK however but the sound volume is very low.
