Thanks to all for your constructive replies. I had the correct connections, but the wrong polarity. The hard drive activity and the power LED are now functioning. I would not have been able to accomplish this without the assistance of this forum. Now in retrospect I realize that the LEDs  must have the correct polarity. How was I to know the correct polarity without trial and error.
