Recently, when I was tinkering with networking in Linux (read: hosed it),
I booted Win98.  I had never noticed the update entry in the start
menu.  I availed myself of it, and found several upgrades that were
germane to my system.  One of them addressed a hanging at shutdown
problem, which may be something altogether different than what you
experienced.  Might be worth looking into, though.  Also, you might check
