Computer Freezes on Boot

I'm sending this on behalf of a friend who is having all kinds of trouble with her computer.  It locks up when it is turned on and she gets a Fatal notice etc.  She clicks on the Esc key and then windows comes.
Computer is a Dell XPST700
OS - Windows 98SE
Pentium III 700
256 memory
2 hard drives - 20 and 13 gigs
Also a Yamaha CRW (SCSI)  and internal ZIP
The video card is nvidia TNT@ M64 4xAGP

Any suggestions to solve this problem?
