HP has 24 hour online chat tech support.  Maybe check with them.  As well a 
client of mine had problems with their "boot optimizer" program.  They told 
me it did not have to run and was not required.  Maybe check if that is an 
issue.

Do you know how to use the MS configuration utility to turn things off?  It 
can be done there.

In answer to the question if things needed to be reloaded...the answer is a 
RESOUNDING YES.  If you do a recovery, then EVERYTHING is lost including 
all your data, documents, etc.

That should be used only as a last resort.
