It is sometimes necessary to disable the comm port the modem is to use in
CMOS, as (apparently) the modem *becomes* that comm port(??). I  don't know
if this is causing the freeze up *after* logging on. It sort of seems that
such a conflict would stop the modem 'in its tracks.' You might want to
check on it anyway.
