Hi, and thanks for all the responses.

Wayne: It is a Microsoft PS/2 mouse and on the bottom it says, "Mouse Port
Compatible Mouse."

Yui: this computer works fine with a serial mouse(it does not have a PS/2
mouse port on it). I plugged the adaptor into this same serial port and
hooked the PS/2 mouse to it. It does not detect though--I tried 2 adaptors
and two known good mice, so know they are OK. I can even disconnect the
adaptor/ps/2 mouse after boot up and hook up the serial mouse and the serial
mouse will work.

Thanks, Edna Sloan
