System is P 350, Win 98 64 MB RAM.
I installed Win 98 over Win 95-no apparent problems.
Installed a 13 GB Maxtor drive, partitioned (3), formatted and copied with
the Maxtor software.
Powered down, installed the new HD  as Master on IDE 1, old HD and CD Rom on
IDE 2.

The new HD boots and operates just fine, the old (3.1 Maxtor) HD is
correctly identified in the CMOS, autodetect and boot-up splash screen, but
does not show in  Explorer, My Computer or DOS. I have TweakUI and drives
A-Z are checked off. Control Panel/System shows two drives-IDE Generic Type
47 and IDE Generic Type 80. I have tried re-configuring these drives as
master and slave on the same cable, to no avail.

I looked the lady right in the eye, and said, "I don't have a clue, but I
know a bunch of experts..."
 What have I done wrong?
