Most of the time Win 98 SE works well when first installed. You don't usually get the shutdown problem for a while after the install. When you do, the MS fix will work often for some time, and then it starts again. My current Win 98 SE machine worked for almost a year after a new install without the shutdown issue. When it happened I used the MS fix, which got rid of the problem for more than 6 months. When it started again I just ran the MS fix again. I am now in what I think will be another 6 months of no shutdown problem, and about when it does happen again I'll be ready to reformat and install either Win 2K or Win XP Pro.

As mentioned previously, this is a fact-of-life with Windows 98.....
