I have not done this, but it would be expected that the client machine
would need an appropriate driver to access even a network device. This
is true of network printers, for example. However, it is often possible
to download the necessary drivers from the network when working with
printers. I don't know if the same is true of the scanner.

If it is a fairly recent HP scanjet, I know there is software in the
most current download of the driver. I have a scanjet 6300, and the
driver for it comes with networking software.  You do have to install
the scanner driver on the other machines that will use it, though.
